Grand Forks AFB (WDAZ-TV) -- Today was the first ever transAtlantic flight for a Remotely Piloted Aircraft

It took off this afternoon from Grand Sky in Grand Forks and will fly 20 hours straight to Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom.

The plane will primarily have military uses to begin with but in the future it could be used to provide cell signal in natural disasters.

“That means in any kind of natural disaster event, we can keep a plane that could possibly provide cell service or wifi service over that affected area, for a very long period of time, with a minimum amount of risk to the people that have to fly it,” says Thomas Swoyer, Grand Sky President.

The flight will be overseen by four of their pilots here in Grand Forks.
