Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Altru offers free exams
GRAND FORKS - October is breast cancer awareness month, and an area hospital is trying something new to promote women’s health and maybe save some lives.
For the very first time, Altru is offering free breast exams every Monday for the entire month.
The exam will be a physical exam where the health care provider will check for any areas of concern, or abnormalities.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.
Altru says they hope the free exams might draw in women who would not have otherwise gotten checked.
“That can be a common misconception too: if they don't have any family history, then they may not be at risk, and that's not true. Since the majority of it is sporadic, we don't know who will get it and who won't,” Altru Breast Center nurse Nicole Hylden said.
Anyone who is interested in a free exam is asked to call Altru and schedule the appointment in advance.
